Series 146 of the University of Florida Archives Public Records Collection consists of files on inactive student organizations plus several files related to the development of the office. Most of the organization files were created in 1949 when all student organizations were required to submit an application form and, periodically, organization reports. A few organizations that disbanded prior to 1949 are included as well. The content of the organization files varies. Some files contain only an application form, several reports, and lists of officers. A few contain constitutions, publications, and correspondence with Dean McClelland. The series does not document social fraternities.

The original campus plans for the University of Florida at Gainesville were developed by the firm of Edwards & Walter. The University of Florida appointed an Advisor to Student Organizations in 1949. Assistant Dean of Students H.K. McClelland served as the first advisor. The office kept files on each organization that sought official recognition from the University. Current student organization files are maintained in the Program Office of the Reitz Union.
